Shane Patton is a former guest of the White Lotus resort in Maui. He visited the resort with his wife, Rachel, on their honeymoon.
Biography[]
Season 1[]
Shane Patton is the first character viewers are introduced to. He is seen sitting alone at the airport, departing after a week long vacation. He is watching a container of human remains being loaded onto his plane, and briefly converses with a couple about a supposed murder that occurred at the resort. Flashing back, we see Shane and his new wife, Rachel arriving to the White Lotus on the charter boat. They are escorted to their suite by staff, and immediately Shane is perturbed, stating that the giant suite they've been given is incorrect. Shane ignores pleas from his wife who asks him to let it go so they can enjoy their stay, but Shane is convinced that the hotel staff has personally wronged him and he seeks to set things right.
The next day, Shane calls his mother to complain about the booking mix-up, gaining the assistance of her shark-like travel agent to help procure them the 'better room'. Afterwards, Shane hopes to plan a romantic dinner for Rachel to make up for the room, and unbeknownst to him, the hotel manager, Armond, has made plans to thwart the romanticism. Shane and Rachel spend a rather eventful and emotional evening on a sunset boat ride with hotel guest, Tanya, deepening the rift between Shane and Rachel's peaceful vacation. Because of this, Shane angrily demands to speak with the hotel's top boss, pushing the animosity between him and Armond to an all time high. That same evening, Shane barges into Armond's office, finding him in sexual relations with a staff member. This forces Armond to offer up the Pineapple Suite to Shane and Rachel for the final days of their stay.
Upon their penultimate morning in Hawaii, Rachel reveals to Shane that she is having second thoughts about the marriage. He leaves to go for a swim, returning a couple hours later to scold Rachel for not double bolting the door as there was a 'thief' on the loose. The two separate, with Rachel getting her own room as Shane traverses the hotel in search of Armond. Upon his return to the suite, Shane smells something foul in the room, and locates a human turd inside his packed luggage. He calls the front office, demanding someone be sent to the room to handle it, and hears someone's footsteps at the end of the call. Unaware that Armond was the one who pooped in his luggage-and is still in the room-Shane grabs a pineapple knife for self-defense, and begins searching the room. As the two simultaneously turn a corner, Shane plunges his knife into Armond's chest, killing him.
Shane is last seen as he was upon his introduction, sulking in the airport. He spots Rachel across the seating area, and embraces her tightly as she tells him that '[she] can be happy', to which he responds, 'thank god'.
Appearance[]
Shane is a relatively handsome looking young man, possessing soft brown hair and blue eyes. He is physically fit, and admired by several women in the resort during his stay.
Personality[]
Likely due to his privileged upbringing, Shane has a rather entitled sense of self worth, and a strong 'orbit' according to his new wife, Rachel. When Shane feels slighted, he becomes aggravated and resentful, not letting go of the issue until he comes out the winner. He does seem to care quite a bit about Rachel despite his superficial behavior, showcasing deep relief when she chooses to stay with him.
