"Just married to Shane, Rachel, a journalist, begins to see her life differently while at the resort." ― Official description
Rachel Patton is a former guest of the White Lotus resort in Maui. She visited the resort with her husband, Shane, on their honeymoon.
Biography[]
Season 1[]
Rachel is introduced with the diverse cast on the charter boat that is taking the residents to the White Lotus resort hotel. She and her new husband, Shane, are whisked away by a staff member to their room, beginning the snowballing effects of their week long vacation. When they arrive in their suite, one that is the fanciest Rachel has ever seen, Shane is disappointed as it is not the room his mother booked for them. While Rachel is happy with their plentiful accommodations, Shane is determined to make things right. Later on, the couple agrees to put the room mess behind them and enjoy their stay.
Shane has busied himself with calling his mother over the room booking debacle, and Rachel has been offered a new writing opportunity for her freelance work. She's excited to share a future prospect with Shane, but he shoots her down and tells her that she doesn't need to work or do anything now that she's married into his wealthy family. Still wanting to retain her independence, Rachel seeks advice from another vacation-goer in the form of Nicole Mossbacher, self-made CEO. At first, the two hit it off, bonding over what it's like being a woman in a male-centered society, but the meeting eventually sours when Nicole finds out that Rachel had written an article about her. Because the article was a 'puff piece', Nicole was deeply offended by how Rachel portrayed her in the article, and Rachel departs feeling rather deflated in herself and her skills.
After Shane has had it out with the hotel manager, Rachel is less than enthused to find out her mother in law has stopped by the resort to help sort out the confusion regarding their room and booking. Kitty, Shane's mother, pressures Rachel in terms of their marriage and decisions to make for their joint futures, causing Rachel to have significant doubts as to whether she wants to remain in this family.
The next time we see Rachel, she and Shane are being escorted into the Pineapple Suite (their original booking), with Rachel seemingly disappointed by the lack of an ocean view in this larger room.
In the final episode, we begin with Rachel hurriedly leaving the room for a facial at the spa, clearly avoiding contact with Shane as she does. While waiting for her facial, Rachel is comforted by Belinda. Afterwards, Rachel has mustered enough courage to tell Shane she doesn't want to be with him anymore, she he leaves to go for a swim while she calms down. Once Shane has returned, Rachel leaves to get her own room at the resort, once again seeking advice from Belinda, who leaves in the midst of her tears.
In the end, while Shane looks across the airport as he waits to go home, Rachel is seen waiting for him. The two embrace, and Rachel promises Shane that "[she] can be happy" in their marriage.
Appearance[]
Rachel is a beautiful young woman with thick brunette hair and striking blue eyes. During her vacation, she is seen sporting fashionable bikinis and one pieces, as well as a plethora of summer dresses.
Personality[]
Rachel is introduced as a quiet, nervous, and deeply insecure young woman who has recently married into a wealthy family. While Rachel comes from a hustling background where she "never had a day where [she] wasn't worried about money", making the transition into the affluent lifestyle rather tricky for her starting out.
Throughout the show, Rachel opens up more about her personal insecurities surrounding her career, her identity, and her future as wife to Shane. She has little to no self confidence in herself or her own journalism career, and reveals that she feels trapped by her new marriage.
In the end, Rachel tells Shane "I can be happy" and seemingly continues her marriage with him.
