"New Day" is the second episode of the first season of The White Lotus. It is the second episode of the series overall. It was released on July 18, 2021 on HBO and HBO Max. It was written and directed by Mike White.
Synopsis[]
A cautiously optimistic Belinda walks a fine line with Tanya, while Armond brainstorms ways to deal with Shane. After her husband belittles her work, Rachel approaches Nicole for advice. Paula and Olivia lose track of their stash, while a revived Mark attempts to connect with Quinn.
Plot Summary[]
Mark receives the joyful news that his cancer diagnosis is negative. However, this revelation opens another unexpected chapter in his life when he discovers from his uncle that his father lived a double life as a gay man and, tragically, died of AIDS.
Meanwhile, Shane takes it upon himself to address the booking error with the travel agent, urging his mother to intervene. Rachel contemplates accepting a new writing assignment, but Shane insists that she doesn't have to work again. Despite his intentions, Rachel meets Nicole, who advises her to maintain her independence and not rely solely on her husband. However, their conversation takes a negative turn when Nicole learns that Rachel wrote a listicle that mentioned her. Nicole criticizes Rachel's reporting, leading Rachel to question her career path. After persistent pressure from Shane, Rachel ultimately decides to abandon the job opportunity.
On the other hand, Olivia and Paula take ketamine on the beach. However, they get interrupted when they encounter Tanya, prompting them to leave the drugs behind unintentionally. Armond, the hotel manager, discovers the abandoned bag of drugs and, under the influence of stress, he makes a regrettable choice by using them despite being a recovering addict.
In another corner of the resort, Olivia becomes jealous when she witnesses Paula flirting with Kai, a hotel employee. Meanwhile, Tanya invites Belinda to dinner and offers to fund a potential wellness business, presenting Belinda with an appealing opportunity to consider.
Quinn finds himself kicked out of the hotel room by Olivia. Seeking solace, he heads to the beach, where he witnesses an awe-inspiring sight of a group of whales in the ocean.
