"Departures" is the sixth and final episode of the first season of The White Lotus. It is the sixth episode of the series overall. It was released on August 15, 2021 on HBO and HBO Max. It was written and directed by Mike White.
Synopsis[]
Rachel shares some harsh truths with Shane and confides in Belinda, who's reeling from bad news of her own. As the Mossbachers turn the page on their harrowing scare, Quinn reveals major life plans. With nothing left to lose, Armond goes on an all-out bender – and exacts the ultimate revenge on his nemesis.
Plot Summary[]
Rachel musters the courage to express her regret to Shane about their marriage, leaving both of them emotionally shaken. Despite Greg's terminal illness, Tanya chooses to stay with him, but she also reveals to Belinda her desire to break free from transactional relationships, offering her a generous sum of money. Devastated by this turn of events, Belinda discards her business plan.
Meanwhile, Kai's arrest leads to the recovery of the stolen jewelry, confirming Olivia's suspicions about Paula's involvement. Paula admits her part in the robbery, but she accuses Olivia of being just as privileged as her family. Despite their conflict, the two eventually reconcile as Paula expresses remorse for her actions.
Quinn opens up to his parents, expressing his desire to stay on the island and join the local paddlers, but his parents dismiss his wishes without consideration. Shane, during a conversation with the Mossbachers, learns about the robbery and promptly contacts his travel agent, who informs Armond's superior, leading to Armond's termination from the White Lotus.
In the wake of his dismissal, Armond's behavior becomes self-destructive as he indulges heavily in Olivia and Paula's remaining drugs on his last workday. Later that night, after serving dinner, Armond secretly sneaks into Shane's suite and commits a disturbing act. Unfortunately, Shane returns unexpectedly, and in a moment of fear, he arms himself with a pineapple knife, leading to a tragic and accidental incident that results in Armond's death.
The guests' return flight carries Armond's body. Rachel, arriving at the airport, faces a difficult decision. Ultimately, she chooses to stay with Shane despite the turmoil. Quinn, however, decides not to board the plane with the rest of his family and instead leaves the airport to join the Hawaiian paddlers, embracing a different path for his future.
